Jonas Balsevičius

Day after day, I spend time in various galleries, museums, and collections, capturing artworks, exhibitions, and ultimately the work of others. I create visuals that tell stories about others, hiding their authors behind the clean, polished, and often sacred “white cube” space. Year after year, I produce thousands of images that help map the cultural landscape. These images fade in and out of relevance until they eventually begin to decay on hard drives, eaten away by bit rot, serving no purpose other than archival material that someone may or may not ever see.

Ironically, I struggle to capture my own work—something that was not an issue until I began working as a technician and coordinator at a gallery, where, ultimately, every exhibition is in some way my work. While documenting exhibitions, I often ask myself why I struggle with something I am so familiar with. Perhaps it is precisely this familiarity that frightens me: everything I capture seems self-explanatory, and I am often afraid of missing something essential.

I am an interdisciplinary artist investigating mundane topics through installation, photography, and performance. I look for details that function as hints, pointing me toward something else. Through this investigative and experimental approach, I create narratives and environments that help me better understand my surroundings and enable my audience to connect with my work.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art: Photography from the University of the Arts London, Camberwell College of Arts. I am currently studying for a Master’s degree in Photography at the Vilnius Academy of Arts.
